Copper Sunday

Well, I thought I'd relate to you the reason why I'm dressed in scarlets. Today is Copper Sunday. As such, about 40 officer cadets piled onto buses and went to the various churches in town (Man, there are a LOT of churches in this town). I went to St. Mary's cathedral. We all carried as many pennies as we could find, and then put them in black dress socks. During the service, we all poured our pennies into the collection basket. The collectors had to empty the basket a few times so that they could carry them. It was interesting going into town with scarlets. Too bad not many people saw us.

The whole tradition with Copper Sunday started in 1878. Back when attending church was mandatory, cadets and staff would go to Sunday services together. Two cadets tried to cause as much noise as they could, so they started to hurl pennies from a distance, into the collection plate. They say that this action amused the commandant at the time and it turned into a tradition. So every year later officer-cadets would bring pennies to church (without the noise). So...it's not that we are cheap or anything, it's just the tradition. Since this day also celebrates the Battle of the Atlantic, officer cadets who don't go to church may participate in a parade at some museum somewhere.
The morale of the story is: pennies are heavy.

Utterly bored...
Michael
